Rick Ormsby

Managing Director

Rick Ormsby is Managing Director at Unbridled Capital. With over 15 years of experience in franchise investment banking, Mr. Ormsby has worked on hundreds of franchise M&A assignments with clients whose collective annual revenues eclipse $4 billion. He himself has completed over $1 billion in sell-side transactions.

Mr. Ormsby worked in finance, operations, real estate, and franchising for YUM! Brands, specifically within the KFC space; however, it was in Morgan Keegan’s equity research division where his service to the restaurant industry began. Since then, he has become recognized as a leading authority on franchise finance and is often asked to provide commentary on current events involving some of the world’s most renowned restaurant companies.

Mr. Ormsby holds a BS from Texas A&M University, an MS from the University of Illinois, and an MBA from Vanderbilt University. He also spent four years at the U.S. Naval Academy and is fluent in Spanish.

René Newsome

CFO and Director of HR

René Newsome is the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Human Resources at Unbridled Capital. Mrs. Newsome brings more than 15 years of experience in accounting, financial analysis, tax preparation, and business consulting to Unbridled’s Executive Team. Previously, she was a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where, as an auditor, she gained extensive accounting experience. She later transitioned into Human Resource Management and served as a Recruiting Manager.

 Mrs. Newsome holds a BS from the University of Kentucky and completed graduate studies at the University of South Florida.

Derek Ball

Vice President and Legal Counsel

Derek Ball is a Vice President and Legal Counsel at Unbridled Capital. Mr. Ball is tasked with growing Unbridled’s current M&A platform and expertise into new franchise brands. He will also be a liaison for debt placement, equity raises and lender compliance for new clients. Mr. Ball will provide financial analysis, valuations and capital strategy to franchisees as well. Furthermore, he will create long-term, on-going relationships with growth-oriented franchisees in new brands.

Prior to joining Unbridled Capital, Derek Ball resided in Colorado as a licensed attorney with a focus on corporate law and a special interest in M&A. There, he received his law degree and LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Denver.

Charles E. Scholtz Jr.


Charles E. Scholtz Jr. is an Associate at Unbridled Capital. Mr. Scholtz is a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from the University of Kentucky. He gained valuable expertise in corporate finance, specifically M&A, during his time at Brown-Forman with the Corporate Development team in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mr. Scholtz will provide financial analysis, valuations and capital strategy to franchisees while developing strategies and resources to meet their needs.

Matthew Isbell


Matthew Isbell is a Business Development Associate at Unbridled Capital with expertise in business development, lead generation, marketing and sales.

Mr. Isbell has an extensive background in sales and marketing, where he worked in the insurance and real estate industries for almost a decade.

At Unbridled, Mr. Isbell’s focus is on creating relationships and business opportunities with new clients in many emerging franchise brands. He will also serve as a liaison between new clients and Unbridled’s team of technical experts, helping to find the best strategy and resources to meet their needs.

Tom Pope

Chairman and CPA

Tom Pope is the Chairman of Unbridled Capital. As the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting at the University of Kentucky, Professor Pope teaches graduate-level courses in international, partnership, and S corporation taxation as well as tax research and policy. He has published numerous articles in some of the most prestigious accounting journals, including The Accounting ReviewThe Tax AdviserTaxes, and Tax Notes

 Professor Pope’s extensive professional experience includes 8 years with the Big Four accounting firms, 5 of which were with Ernst & Whinney (now part of Ernst & Young), including 2 years with their National Tax Department in Washington, D.C. He subsequently held the position of Senior Manager of the Tax Department in Lexington, Kentucky.  

Professor Pope has also been a leader and speaker at professional tax conferences all across the United States and is active as a tax consultant. He holds a BS from the University of Louisville as well as both an MS and a DBA from the University of Kentucky.
